How to Maintain Your Electric Scooter: A Complete Guide
An electric scooter is a mechanical machine — and like all machines, it rewards basic maintenance with years of reliable performance. Most riders neglect maintenance until something breaks. Don't be that rider. This guide covers everything you need to keep your KuKirin running perfectly.
Monthly Maintenance (10 minutes)
Tire Check
For pneumatic tires: check pressure monthly. Under-inflated tires increase rolling resistance (less range) and increase puncture risk. Most KuKirin pneumatic tires run best at 35-45 PSI. Use a standard bicycle pump with a Presta or Schrader valve adapter.
For solid tires: no maintenance needed, but inspect for cracks or wear every 3 months.
Brake Check
Test both brakes at low speed. The scooter should stop within 4-5 meters from 25 km/h. If it takes longer, your brake pads may be worn. For mechanical disc brakes, the pad should have at least 1.5mm of material remaining. Most brake pads last 6-12 months of regular use.
Bolt Inspection
Vibration loosens bolts over time. Check the stem bolt, handlebar clamps, deck bolts, and wheel bolts monthly. Use a 4mm or 5mm Allen key. Never overtighten — just snug.
Quarterly Maintenance (30 minutes)
Battery Care
Your battery is the most expensive component on the scooter. Treat it well:
- Never drain to 0% — stop riding when battery reaches 10-15%
- Don't leave at 100% for extended periods (if storing, charge to 60%)
- Charge at room temperature — never in freezing conditions
- Use only the original charger or a certified replacement
Cable and Connector Check
Inspect all visible cables for fraying or chafe marks, especially around the stem where cables bend repeatedly. Check that all connectors are firmly seated. A loose connector can cause intermittent power issues.
Cleaning
Use a damp cloth — never a high-pressure hose, even on IP65-rated scooters. Water can penetrate around the charging port and cause corrosion over time. For the deck and frame, a car detailing spray works well. Keep the motor hub area free of dirt buildup.
Annual Maintenance
Bearing Check
Spin each wheel by hand. It should spin freely with no grinding sensation. If you feel roughness, the wheel bearings may need replacement — a simple job at any bicycle shop.
Brake Bleed (Hydraulic Brakes)
For G2 Master, G4, G3 Pro, and G4 Pro with hydraulic brakes: the brake fluid should be bled every 12-18 months. Degraded brake fluid absorbs moisture, reducing stopping power. Any bicycle shop can do this — it takes about 30 minutes.
Seasonal Storage
If you're storing your scooter for winter (3+ months):
- Clean thoroughly and dry completely
- Charge battery to 60%
- Store indoors at 10-25°C — never in an unheated garage
- Recheck the battery charge every 2-3 months and top up if needed
- Before first spring ride: full inspection + tire pressure + brake test
Follow this routine and your KuKirin will still be running strong in year 5. Neglect it, and you'll be replacing parts by year 2. The choice is yours — and it takes less than 2 hours per year.
